I could also build a L-shaped wardrobe in one side of the bed instead, if I don’t place the bed in the middle of the wall, which would create extra space in one side (the bed wouldn’t be squished into a corner, but there would be a considerable difference between the space in one side and the other; let’s say 4 feet in one side and 2 feet in the other side). People sometimes avoid rugs in the bedroom because larger-scale ones can be expensive, but Cerrano insists it's a worthwhile investment for your sleep: "Adding an area rug under or near the bed is another way to help ground the energy when sleeping and create a balance between yin (soft textures) and yang (hard surfaces)." "You should always be able to control the level of light in your bedroom," Brophy says. She recommends having lights on a dimmer, so you can have exactly as much or as little light as you want. "Lighting has such an effect on our moods and energy. I tell people to buy a few different kind of light bulbs and test them out," she says. "See what kind of light works best for you."


Crystals are the powerhouses of good feng shui energy; they bring the essence of abundance from deep within the earth. If you are new to crystals, start with clear quartz, preferably in a rough/natural shape. In feng shui, it's said that mirrors in front of the bed invite a third person into the marriage. Mirrors are also thought to reflect energy around a space, which could disrupt your sleep. If you do need to have a mirror, make sure it's facing something that you love looking at. (This may seem like common sense, but it's something a lot of us forget about!)
You guessed it. Electronics, like a TV, laptop and smartphone, are a bedroom no-no because they can delay — or disrupt — sleep. If you use your phone as your alarm clock, keep it five to 10 feet away from your bed so you have to get up to shut it off. This way, you’re also not tempted for a late-night scroll on Instagram or Facebook. Guilty? “Before you consider buying a white noise maker, I would try to remove as many electronics from your bedroom,” Cho says. According Cho and other feng shui experts, electronics release electromagnetic energy, even if they’re not being used, so it’s best to keep them out of the bedroom. You might also want to try flowing to these yoga poses to help prepare your body for bed.

You might not realize it, but the energy from the things you store underneath your bed can transfer to you, Cho says. That’s why feng shui practitioners advise clearing out the chaos, so energy can flow easily around you while you’re sleeping. “If those things have or represent active energy, like shoes, books or an exercise mat, you can absorb it on a subconscious level.” If you absolutely have to store things there (hello city living!), Cho recommends limiting them to soft items, like bed sheets, linens and pillows.
