Adjusting the natural light coming through windows is another way to control the amount of the Fire element. If too much sunlight is coming through, particularly on the South side of the home, then using drapery or blinds is helpful. On the contrary, to allow more natural light, open window coverings. At night, windows take on a yin quality because they create a black hole effect. They actually pull energy out of spaces, so it is important to close window blinds or drapes at night.

Although Cerrano advises embracing color, she also cautions against using too much of it. "You don't need to paint your entire room one of these colors," she explains. You'll still reap all the benefits of a hue if you incorporate it into your space sparingly. "You could have a neutral wall color (creme or beige) and accent your living room with noticeably warm colors through light sources, artwork, an area rug, or accent pillows," she suggests.

It's hard to rest with too much active energy around you. You have to be aware, for example, of what electricity is running behind your bed. Try to minimize it with a battery-operated alarm clock instead of an electric one. Turn off your phone at night and keep it out of the room. No laptop or computer near the bed. An hour before you go to sleep, stop looking at it.
True to its character, the Metal element gives shape and form to many household furnishings. For example, a metal base is often used to give support to a table. Lamp bases, chair legs, window casings are other examples. Metal is also used in building construction, particularly in multi-story buildings in the form of steel construction where strength is paramount. Metal is often used for appliances, such as a stainless steel dishwasher. Metal comes in a variety of forms, including aluminum, steel, and iron. Because of the functionality of the Metal element, it most commonly occurs in our spaces in its literal form as opposed to symbolically.
Use your feng shui birth element to help create a home that nourishes and supports your energy. For example, if your birth element is Fire, you can introduce the expressions of the Fire element, such as triangular shapes or the Fire colors: red, orange, purple, magenta, pink, and yellow. You will also want a strong Wood element in your home, as Wood feeds the Fire element in the productive cycle of the five feng shui elements.
If you’ve researched feng shui at all, you’ve likely discovered many sources that require certain colors be contained in certain parts of your home, whether north, south, east, or west. The truth is, the actual color you choose for each space is not nearly as critical to the positive chi as is how the color makes you feel. An old, tired, dingy painted wall of any color will feel just that way – old, tired, and dingy, whereas a freshly painted, clean wall of the exact same color will breathe life and energy into the entire space.

Brick is often used on the exterior of homes and as an accent finish in interiors. Brick is a composite of clay (Earth element) and sand (Metal element) and fired (Fire element) in a kiln. It combines all three of these elements. The color of the brick may help determine which element feels dominant. For example, red brick will feel more fiery, while a sand colored brick may look more like an Earth element, particularly with its rectangular shape.

For children’s beds, this might not apply, but for an adult, feng shui would have you leave sufficient room on either side of the bed for a safe and comfortable exit. This is common sense for a master bed that sleeps two, but it applies to beds for single sleepers as well. Remember, we’re encouraging positive chi and flow, and you don’t want good energy being stopped dead in its tracks on a wall side of the bed!

Always be mindful of the energy in your home and how it influences your wellbeing. Make a habit of paying close attention to the so-called feng shui "trinity" that is deeply connected to your health: your bedroom, your bathroom, and your kitchen. Nothing is static in the world of energy, so you must remain mindful of their condition and effects. Embrace and promote the right energies for you to keep your home healthy and happy.
Live plants have their own chi and will draw chi to them. Don't have a green thumb? "The next best thing is to showcase high-quality silk plants and flowers — not plastic," says Varone. The best places for plants are in the kitchen (between hot and cold appliances to create balance), in the dining room (to draw abundance), and in the family room (to promote health, life, and connection).
This is consistent with the scientific findings mentioned above, where plants are used to increase the academic performance of high schoolers. The plant suggested by feng shui is the “lucky bamboo”, where four straight bamboos are placed in the Wen Chang area. You will find more details about this in the section below: Where to Place Indoor Plants.

Each of the five elements appears in nature in their literal form. For example, the Water element in its purest form is literally water. The same is true with the Fire element and all the other elements. The elements can show up in our spaces in their literal form or in a symbolic form as well. Each of the five elements has a particular shape and color associated with it that symbolically represents its energy. This is a great way to bring in the elements into our décor if the element in its natural state isn’t accessible.
