Thanks, Victor! The kitchen is in the front of the house and the house does actually face northeast. If the kitchen is not “draining away career luck” per what I read, what feng shui elements can enhance career? Interestingly, our front door opens to a split staircase, i.e., the right hand stir case going up to the main living area and the left hand stair case going down to the basement.

As for color choices, the feng shui expert explains that it depends on your line of work. "In general, office spaces that require writing, mathematics, and science benefit from wall colors in shades of blue, green, or even beige. These are considered a strong backdrop of color. From there, you could accent the office with artwork, lighting, plants, area rugs, and anything else you need to help achieve the best focus and productivity. To stimulate the energy more, implementing touches of warm colors like red, yellow, and orange can stimulate the creative aspects of our brains. In feng shui and on a practical level, we're always looking to establish a harmonious collaboration of colors."
You can apply the classical principles of feng shui to other objects, such as your desk, in addition to the office itself. To start, be sure to place your desk so that it faces the door, as this will symbolize your ability to see opportunities and seize them when they arrive. If you work from home, this is a lot easier to accomplish because you will not have a boss telling you whether or not you can move your desk around. But if this is not possible at all, whether you work from home or not, place a mirror on your desk that gives you a view of the doorway in order to generate the same beneficial effects.
Feng shui (pronounced "fung shway") is the ancient Chinese practice of arranging physical objects to attract positive energy. It’s based on the idea that everything in a person’s surrounding environment affects his or her inner life. Feng shui practitioners believe that the placement of objects in a room, building, or other space will affect the flow of chi (life force or essential energy) within the space. If there’s good chi flowing, whoever’s in the space will get a boost of positive energy. Pretty sweet, right?
"Whether grown in an indoor patio, on a balcony, or outdoors, the orange tree will bring abundance into your home. It should be placed in your wealth or health gua. Citrus trees are believed to be very lucky. I used to have a grapefruit tree that grew so large, we could provide the entire neighborhood with fruit year-round. This is the true meaning of abundance: when you can provide enough for yourself and others."

The image to the left is a good example of a balanced environment. It has characteristics of all five feng shui elements. The wood element can be seen in the soaring vertical window treatments. The earth element is represented by the horizontal, rectangular furniture as well as the earthy colors and pottery. The fire element is brought in through the natural and artificial lighting and the antler base of the lamp. Finally, the water element can be seen in the mirror and asymmetrical shapes.
If you are hoping for a raise or looking to close a big business deal, metal elements should be put in the western corner of the room and can be used to bring on an increase in financial success, income, or profits. Metal objects can be made of metal or just colored to represent them. Design elements made of stone, metals, or marble will give the impression of professionalism and success.
Good air purifying plants are a must for any workspace! You can choose a beautiful vibrant plant with a stunning pot, for example, in order to maximize its effect on your desk. Crystals are also a very popular feng shui cure, and there are many crystals that are suitable for your office. Various images can be targeted to specific goals, and so can specific items that you have a special connection with.

The placement of desks in a space can have a large effect on your staff's work output. The arrangement can affect everything from exposure to natural light to a staff member's perspective on the whole office. Feng Shui practices recommend placing desks in positions that face the entry point of the room. Placing staff in front of walls or dividers can hinder creativity and block inspiration. Instead, placing desks so staff members have a wide view of the room with their backs facing a wall can improve a sense of trust in the space. This is considered the "command position" that allows a person to feel a sense of control over their own environment.
Above all, tackling your storage needs and limiting visual clutter can do a lot to boost your productivity. "Understand the use of your office, and you'll know the type of storage that is needed," says Cerrano. "Do you need to have hard copies? If so, file cabinets and closets tend to offer great storage space. Perhaps a low-sitting bookcase is best or simple shelving along the wall. If you wish to connect more with the digital age, you could store files on your computer and on an external drive. When in doubt, keep what you need, and release what you don't need. This may sound elementary, and yet it's an extremely powerful habit to adopt that transcends your physical, mental, emotional, and energetic bodies."
shui your home base. if you work outside the house, give your home office a thorough purge, cleaning, and rearrangement, too. oftentimes, professional splinters can be held in place by secondary spaces – like your home. revitalizing this space is like turning the soil – it will promote the idea that life in both spaces will have ample resources/nutrients and space to grow, thrive, and SUCCEED!

One of the criteria that the feng shui expert recommends for establishing a commanding position is to have a solid wall supporting you. "Using a visual cue, think of the solid wall as a mountain protecting your back. Remember, be flexible in how you interpret the feng shui principles." For example, if your floor plan only allows a desk position where your back is supported by a window, Cerrano recommends adding a few plants along the window sill or behind your desk. "The main characteristic of plants (also known as the wood element) is to offer support. Again, this is a general guideline because you need to become acquainted with your office to see what areas allow for the best commanding position and proceed from there."
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that involves arranging your environment in a way that allows the energy (or Chi) to flow smoothly through it. This energy is made up of five elements (Wood, Earth, Fire, Metal, and Water), and its believed that the flow of this energy can have considerable effects on your finances, health, happiness, and personal relationships. Whether you believe that it is the flow of the chi, or that the ancient practice tapped into great design and sense of proportion, the practice can definitely has a positive impact on design.
For optimal feng shui, place the bamboo in a shady spot where you want to invite more blessings for good luck and harmony, such as on the counter of your business place or the living room of your home. In Asia, people commonly tie red ribbons around the stalks of the lucky bamboo plant during the Chinese New Year and place it on a special table together with other auspicious objects, like the golden ingot.
Bamboo is a plant that is abundant in Asia and grows very quickly. It represents upright and honest growth, as well as flexibility and adaptability. Since the bamboo plant does not flower or fruit, it’s lifespan is long and simple. And because it is hollow, bamboo also symbolizes an empty heart of humbleness. I love the fact that in western culture, lucky bamboo has also become a symbol for the green sustainability movement. Lucky bamboo is not technically bamboo, but it looks very similar, is super easy to take care of, and represents the same thing symbolically.

The Pachira aquatica is famously known as the Chinese money tree because of its five-lobed palmate leaves. The five lobes are considered lucky in Asia because they are associated with the five feng shui elements of water, earth, fire, wood, and metal. It is often distinguished for its braided stem and flourishing leaves that are sometimes made to create a round-shaped canopy. It is widely used as an ornamental plant in Asia, where you can find them placed in business offices and malls, grown as a bonsai, or given out as gifts during the Chinese New Year.
Ensuring your desk has the optimal feng shui for the office desk flow is difficult for cubicles, as often moving the desk is not an option, but you can still implement many of the same feng shui for the office desk concepts. Simply substitute the words "desk" each time you see "office", and you'll be able to implement feng shui easily at your office desk.
If you want your work to be noticed by the people who matter, fire up the South side of your desk with all things red! This is an ideal place to hang awards, accomplishments, or mementos of projects you are most proud of. (I hung a picture of my eBook’s cover here.) This serves as your font of power, building your confidence in the office will help you stand behind your proposals, and have the courage to propose them at all!

"Once you have a clearer vision for the function of your office and understand what pieces of furniture you need, you can establish the arrangement of furniture," says Cerrano. She recommends starting with the desk position and building outward from there. "Essentially, you are looking for the best commanding position, which allows the occupant to literally, energetically, and metaphorically see and feel who and what opportunities are approaching their life. Positioning your desk inside any office could symbolize avoiding collaborations with unbeneficial business partners and signing contracts or agreements that are one-sided."
Separating unfinished tasks from completed projects will help you
gain control over workflow and improve your work focus and organization, and you can use different colored folders to classify files by date,
status, or category. Once you’ve sorted out paperwork, put away the folders that can wait and concentrate on the files which need to be completed
 without delay.
Of course cultivating the North of your desk will help you solidify your actions in your vocation, and improve productivity. Introducing elements of nourishment and the encouragement of flow will help you grow in this aspect. Purchase an inexpensive water fountain or all things blue in color. Posters of industry leaders are an excellent choice. (Don’t forget about those who started it all!)
Lucky bamboo plant is often associated with Feng Shui friendly plants. Lucky bamboo is easy to grow, doesn’t require a lot of sunlight, and because it can be grown in water it can be an excellent choice for bathrooms and kitchens. However, you don’t have to limit your choices to lucky bamboo when selecting a plant to use in your Feng Shui décor. Here are 9 additional Feng Shui friendly houseplants --
In an open plan with many desks, use plants to soften sharp edges and corners. Sharp edges create “poison arrowsâ€? which contribute to conditions such as irritability, discomfort, and even disease to name a few! Also, the aisles should be large enough so that the energy moves slower. Make sure to use subtle colors in an open office plan. Bright, vivid colors are too active in a large bustling room.
clear the desk every day. if i stopped by right now and calculated how much free space is on your desk, what would my sum be? when a workspace is bogged down by paperwork, guess how we feel? always leave your desk clean + clear when you’re finished. this increases productivity and job satisfaction. if that’s not motivation enough, take one guess what ritual top entrepreneurs around the world have in common? a clean desk. yes, even necessity likes to feel beautiful.
