Gordon also adds that where you put your plants can have an impact on your mental clarity and suggests understanding your home's bagua map (aka feng shui's floor plan to bringing good intentions to your home). "Plants are more at home in some areas such as health and family, or wealth and reputation," she shares. "They are less at home in other areas, such as creativity, mentors, career, self-knowledge, or love and marriage." Ready to bring the right intentions into your home while clearing the air and practicing your green-thumb skills?
If you work from home, you can apply many of the same principles of feng shui for offices that you would apply in any other work environment. Keep the entrance of your home neat, clean, and free of clutter. The same goes for the entrance to your office room. Even if you never meet clients in person at home, this is an important step in opening up the flow of energy and welcoming positive improvements to your work life.
As Feng Shui is concerned with how you arrange your environment, you should also carefully consider where you place your plants. Although cacti are often said to cause arguments because of their spikes, they actually shield you from negative energy. However, they need to be placed in lower traffic areas of the workplace, such as washrooms. In fact, as this area attracts negative energy, placing a cactus in the bathroom is one of the best things you can do to improve it.
Any office environment can become hectic or stressful at times, making it important to find ways to make the space as calming as possible. One of the more subtle, yet effective ways to accomplish this is by painting the walls based on the principles of feng shui. The practice of feng shui revolves around the arrangement of your immediate environment in a manner that allows good chi (positive energy) to flow smoothly throughout the room, thereby nourishing its occupants. By creating a color scheme based on these principles utilizing the five Chinese elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water, you can help to create a calming environment in your office or energize your employees.
In the picture above you will notice everything is organized and filed away. As little as possible is on top of the desk but a plant was added to improve the air quality and fulfills the prosperity corner of your desk. The right side of your desk should have some room for a little creativity whether it is a notepad or a list of ideas. You can read about the ultimate feng shui desk guide here but in summary the desk layout touches on the following Feng Shui energy & flow areas:
If it’s ok to do this does the height of the cabinets make a difference? I’m considering some that are around 2 metres high, or alternatively some that are 128cm high (these will reach the top of my head or possibly my forehead when I’m sitting), or alternatively lower ones. All the cabinets will be the same height, whichever I choose, and will go along the length of the wall behind the desk.

Don’t worry about that. I’m guessing that the idea is based on kitchen having the fire element (cooking), and the North having the water element. Not sure why Wood is suggested because it actually weakens water and strengthens fire. Earth should be introduced if using their line of logic. Again, I wouldn’t worry about your kitchen location unless you take your house’s facing direction into consideration.
Alison, thanks for writing. My desk in my home office also faces a wall so I know whereof you speak. If you can’t turn things around by separating the arms of the “L” and using one arm in the Command Position, place a mirror on or near the desk to reflect activity behind you. Here’s a link to a previous post about this: http://openspacesfengshui.com/feng-shui-tips/2010/02/feng-shui-office-command-position/ Good luck!
The Chinese practice of feng shui dates back several millennia and basically involves arranging your environment in such a way that everything harmonizes and stimulates positive energy. According to these principles, using feng shui in your home office can help enhance productivity, creativity and even your earnings. We have some tips from Feng Shui & Beyond, an online guide to the practice, on how to feng shui your home office.
"Feng shui emphasizes the harmony with one's internal and external environment and the world at large," he explains. "Creating this harmony is particularly important when assessing the color of one’s home office, the place in the home where wealth and abundance are of paramount importance." So how exactly should you choose the ideal feng shui office colors? Brown recommends answering one simple question: Which cardinal direction does your home office face?
One of the key principles of feng shui is achieving happiness. One of the the easiest steps towards achieving this is through organizing and removing clutter around the office. The idea is that clearing away clutter helps bring in vital energy which promotes clarity and focus. Overall, 50% of your desk should be cleared. You want to be able to arrive at a clean desk when you get to work and leave with a clean desk at the end of the day. Taking the extra time to organize things correctly and efficiently will help you from having to do it again in a few months.
