Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), one of the founding fathers of Jesuit China missions, may have been the first European to write about feng shui practices. His account in De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas... tells about feng shui masters (geologi, in Latin) studying prospective construction sites or grave sites "with reference to the head and the tail and the feet of the particular dragons which are supposed to dwell beneath that spot". As a Catholic missionary, Ricci strongly criticized the "recondite science" of geomancy along with astrology as yet another superstitio absurdissima of the heathens: "What could be more absurd than their imagining that the safety of a family, honors, and their entire existence must depend upon such trifles as a door being opened from one side or another, as rain falling into a courtyard from the right or from the left, a window opened here or there, or one roof being higher than another?".[65]
If designed right, though, your bedroom has limitless potential. Between those four walls, you can have a sanctuary, a REM fortress, a dream world… This space can also symbolize your relationship with yourself, your partner and the most important things in your life. And feng shui — the ancient Chinese practice of balancing energies in any given space by placing your furniture and belongings a certain way — might help.
When building the new entrance to Hong Kong Disneyland, Walt Disney executives decided to shift the angle of the front gate by 12 degrees. They did so after consulting a feng shui specialist, who said the change would ensure prosperity for the park. Disney also put a bend in the walkway from the train station to the gate, to make sure the flow of positive energy, or chi, did not slip past the entrance and out to the China Sea. Heeding the advice of a feng shui consultant is one of many steps Disney executives have taken at the park to reflect the local culture -- and to make sure they do not repeat some mistakes of the past.
According to feng shui expert, Rodika Tchi, Chi is manifested in yin yang characteristics, or the idea that our universe is made up of two opposing yet deeply interconnected forces of Yin and Yang. It is important to identify sources of imbalance and create once again the right amount for those that occupy a particular space and also for the space's original purpose. For example, a bedroom should be a place of rest and not of entertainment - at least not of electronic entertainment anyway - and there are specific feng shui guidelines you can follow to ensure this.

Sight: As I mentioned before, Earthy tones are really what you want to be seeing in the bedroom. Fiery tones (reds, pinks, and oranges) can also be nice in moderation. Again, these accents should always be presented in pairs. In my bedroom, you'll find a pair of small pink Mandarin ducks—a traditional Chinese symbol. I love these because the story goes that the ducks were always faithful to each other. Find accents like this that speak to you.
When you see the homes of wealthy people, the number one thing that you actually see is open space. An abundance of open space. Strange, no? Rarely do you see wealthy houses full to the brim with all sorts of stuff. It is the luxury of open space and plenty of breathing room that attracts more wealth energy. In feng shui terms this basically means there is open space to allow more and to enjoy more. To create more, explore more and be more.
The main difference between the practices of feng shui (or "vastu" in the Hindu culture) and Western traditions is a belief that we as humans are connected to the spaces we inhabit. Believers in feng shui see sacred purposes and mystical meanings behind design -- not just artistically appealing buildings or superficially pretty surroundings. They view the world in terms of cosmic energy.
THE address of Valley Springs Industrial Center in this enterprising pocket of Los Angeles County is 168 Mason Way, which means nothing to the English-speaking world, except perhaps those named Mason, and everything to the Chinese tenants who fill all but 2 of the 14 units. ''We came here because we wanted a new look for the company and because in Chinese the numbers on the address mean the business will continue to grow,'' said Barbara Choi, the founder of the Cosmobeauti Lab, a cosmetics and personal-care products manufacturer.
Decorate your home or office with a feng shui aquarium to attract wealth chi. This is a fun and lively way to add beauty and wealth to your personal areas and workspaces. You can also use feng shui symbols and images of specific fish to bring a sense of wealth to your environment. Consider using images of art in the bedroom, a fish clock in the kitchen, or a fish shower curtain in the bathroom, for instance.
Humans looked at birds since times immemorial for the feeling of inspiration, freedom, and a longing for being united with the divine. Of course, each bird has its own distinctive qualities; a peacock is very different from the dove, for example, or the magpie. When choosing images of birds as a feng shui cure, first and foremost be guided by your own experience and understanding.
Though I love how it looks, I’m not sure how comfortable I will be when sleeping on that frame. Having experienced wood cracking and furnitures breaking, I would feel anxious and scared of breaking that bed when I move or adjust on the bed to find a comfortable sleeping position. I suggest that you choose comfortability over design. And as for bed frames, choose the ones with proper support so that you can feel more relaxed.
IF you noticed them at all, you would think they were part of the restaurant's new design: two small octagons outside, each with a mirror at its center. The point? To protect the restaurant from the building across the street, whose sharp edges, according to Judith Wendell, a feng shui consultant, ''create a knifelike effect on the restaurant's energy, cutting into it -- so we're reflecting it back.'' Yes, it's come to this. Opening a restaurant in New York has always required a certain combination of savvy and insanity, especially at problematic addresses. Everyone can think of a space that has had a run of bad luck, no matter how many menus were tried. So when Joy Pierson and Bart Potenza, the owners of Candle Cafe, a successful vegan restaurant at 1307 Third Avenue at 75th Street, decided to expand into the property recently vacated by the failed Dining Room, they took its karma into their own hands. They hired Ms. Wendell to go where no contractor had gone before and fix what seemed to be ailing the two-story town house at 154 East 79th Street at Lexington Avenue.
When you hear about untimely muggings, rapes, accidents and deaths on news you must remember that the victim was at the wrong place at the wrong time. When you learn about feng shui numbers you can reduce the occurrence of accidents and misfortunes in your life. Also you must know how to activate good stars that cause financial windfalls, unexpected good news or opportunities, promotion at work, a chance meeting that brings happiness.
Feng shui is a Chinese metaphysical philosophy that brings harmony to an environment. Good feng shui does not bring you wealth if you do not strive for it, but it does give you the necessary support to seek your wealth and fortune. Feng shui also helps you use various methods to create an environment at home and in the office that will strengthen you and attract the feng shui energies of prosperity and wealth.
Pretending your space has good energy by hanging chimes and crystals just does not work; it is a false (and naive) cover up. So, focus on creating a genuinely strong, healthy and solid foundation, and then apply the wealth and money feng shui tips and cures that truly speak to you. Always choose the wealth feng shui cures that make sense in your home or office; a three legged frog in a modern house may look absolutely ridiculous (unless it has deep meaning to you); and it will sure not work to attract wealth.
Use your feng shui birth element to help create a home that nourishes and supports your energy. For example, if your birth element is Fire, you can introduce the expressions of the Fire element, such as triangular shapes or the Fire colors: red, orange, purple, magenta, pink, and yellow. You will also want a strong Wood element in your home, as Wood feeds the Fire element in the productive cycle of the five feng shui elements.

Persecution was the most severe during the Cultural Revolution, when feng shui was classified as a custom under the so-called Four Olds to be wiped out. Feng shui practitioners were beaten and abused by Red Guards and their works burned. After the death of Mao Zedong and the end of the Cultural Revolution, the official attitude became more tolerant but restrictions on feng shui practice are still in place in today's China. It is illegal in the PRC today to register feng shui consultation as a business and similarly advertising feng shui practice is banned. There have been frequent crackdowns on feng shui practitioners on the grounds of "promoting feudalistic superstitions" such as one in Qingdao in early 2006 when the city's business and industrial administration office shut down an art gallery converted into a feng shui practice.[71] Some communist officials who had previously consulted feng shui were terminated and expelled from the Communist Party.[72]
