Design tweaks include reducing the numbers of mirrors on the wall, and positioning beds away from facing the door—both concessions to feng shui (the former bounces energy, creating restlessness; the latter is the position of the dead). — Mark Ellwood, Condé Nast Traveler, "How Chinese Tourists Are Changing the Travel Landscape," 2 Nov. 2018 My own perception of feng shui revolts against the number of doors—that many egress routes can’t be restful. — Alexandra Lange, Curbed, "A museum grows in Houston," 1 Nov. 2018 The life coach starts with a decluttering exercise followed by a feng shui session before ending with the blessing. — Katie Jackson, Fox News, "What is a house blessing and should you have one?," 1 Mar. 2017 The manicured grounds, which include two outdoor fireplaces, fountain features and a koi pond, were done by landscape architect Mark Rios and feng shui consultant David Cho. — Neal J. The feng shui consultant recognizes that it's not always possible to leave the under-bed area completely clutter-free: "If you do need to store items under the bed, be mindful of who gave these items to you and what emotional content you associate with them." She adds that some items—specifically bedding, clothing, and towels—are better to store under the bed than others. A small number of books is also acceptable, as long as their titles and content are positive.
The bagua map is used by first orienting yourself to the main entrance to the house, or the entry to an individual room, then using the map to identify the different key areas of the space. Then, specific items can be positioned in those key areas to enhance the feng shui. For example, the place defined as the wisdom area is a good place for a small stack of books, while the love and relationship space is a good place for a wedding photo.
If you're going to have mirrors in the bedroom, Brophy recommends avoiding hanging them across from the bed or across from windows. "Mirrors reflect energy and light," Brophy says. "Being able to see your reflection while you're in bed can be distracting. And if you hang a mirror across from a window, it will reflect light and may make it more difficult for you to sleep soundly."
Smell: I advise using essential oils in an ultrasonic diffuser or in a candle diffuser (most wax candles these days are packed with synthetic fragrances). Limit it to a few drops of oil in diluted in water, and don't leave them diffusing for more than an hour or two. They are potent! I love lavender and jasmine oils for a calming smell before bed. If I have a cough, I'll go with ravintsara or eucalyptus. Looking to amp up the sexual energy? Check out cinnamon, ylang-ylang, and best of all, winter savory.
For efficiency's sake, it's never practical to have two work stations situated back-to-back. Think about what it'll look like when two people are cooking. This is why many kitchen experts will suggest a triangular set up between the fridge, stove, and sink. But Benko suggests there is also a feng shui reasoning behind it: "There can be a conflict in the house when you have fire right across from water—water puts out fire."
I know many of us could use extra storage, but under the bed is not the place for it! In feng shui, it’s best to have the air flow all around you while you’re sleeping, so it’s a big no-no to have objects under the bed—especially sharp, dangerous items. Other items to watch out for are shoes, books, or anything associated with very active energy. If you have mementos from past relationships stored under there, it may mean that relationship is holding you back. If you must store something under the bed, make it something soft, like extra linens and pillows.
Nature creates a sense of peace. In fact, research shows that viewing nature reduces anger and anxiety and enhances feelings of pleasure. So flood your home with natural light, open windows and doors to let fresh air inside, and bring plants indoors. Decorate with bamboo, wood, or wicker, and use stones and rocks to add texture. You can also adorn the walls with paintings of nature and its serenity.
Take a look at your kitchen cabinets and check to see if they are built up the ceiling or a soffit. It is good Feng Shui if there is no space above the kitchen upper cabinets. This space above the kitchen cabinets attracts dust and stagnant energy. The chi gets stuck there and encourages dead energy which may hold you back in your life. If there is a space, there’s a Feng Shui adjustment for you! Place some lighting, green plants (live or very realistic looking) or beautiful and loved objects in this location. These objects bring life to this area and transforms the energy.
In feng shui, there are private (yin) spaces, like bedrooms, and public (yang) spaces, like living rooms. A TV in a public space is OK. A television often becomes the focal point, which is fine if that's what you want. But if the intention of the room is, say, to gather the family, then keep the TV in something closed or in a less-than-central spot on the wall, so it doesn't dominate. For a family space, it's also nice to have a soft ottoman in place of a coffee table, so the kids can be in the center of the action.
Boost your career with a better desk position. Position your desk cater-corner to and facing the office or cube door (even if you don’t actually have a door in your workspace). If you can’t turn your desk to face the door, arrange a mirror on your desk or wall so you can see who’s coming. This adjustment helps you encounter more opportunities, go further in your field, and lose less often.
As you'd probably expect, your headboard and bed frame play a significant role in optimizing the feng shui of your bedroom, according to Cerrano. Choose "a solid wooden headboard and frame," she suggests. This "is a common suggestion in Western feng shui because the element of wood relates to the symbolic nature of supporting your body and energy when sleeping," she explains.
You may be inclidned to go bright green in a bedroom, but Cerrano suggests it's not such a good idea. "Pick neutral colours when painting large walls to not overstimulate the energy when you are sleeping. This could include beiges, cream colours, and earth tones. You could even include some cool blue tones. For smaller accent colours, pick colours associated with partnership energy: pinks, reds, and whites. This could be implemented through artwork, small crystals (like rose quartz), organic candles or bed sheets. Essentially, you are creating a sacred and sensual space for yourself and to share with another—if that is your intention. The addition of certain feng shui colours is just one way to assist in the atmospheric rendering of good feng shui."
Landscape ecologists often find traditional feng shui an interesting study. In many cases, the only remaining patches of old forest in Asia are "feng shui woods", associated with cultural heritage, historical continuity, and the preservation of various flora and fauna species. Some researchers interpret the presence of these woods as indicators that the "healthy homes", sustainability and environmental components of ancient feng shui should not be easily dismissed.
